RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna U-18 Prep Student-Athlete, Gavin McKenna, was named Top Scorer for the U-18 Prep Leauge in the CSSHL. McKenna had 65 points in 35 games as a 14 year old playing age advanced - of his 65 points, 23 were goals.
McKenna is in his second year with RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna, playing on the U-15 Prep Team last year. Unfortunatley last year McKenna was not able to get any games in due to COVID-19 restrictions throughout the 2020-21 season. McKenna jumped to the U-18 Prep team for the 2021-22 season and has loved every second of it. McKenna is about to start play offs with the U-18 Prep Team, best of luck to McKenna and the rest of his team.
We sat down for a quick chat with Gavin as he prepares for the CSSHL Western Championship Week in Penticton, B.C.
RINK: What are your feelings and the teams heading into playoffs in Penticton?
Gavin: "Excited, very excited. It is going to be a lot of fun. There is some pressure starting play offs as everyone wants to win, but I have a great group of guys alongside me. In our last 10-games of the year we have been playing really well, turned it up and played hard going into playoffs."
RINK: What was the key to your success throughout the year?
Gavin: "One thing I tried to focus on coming into this season and throughout the season was my shot. I also can't take all the credit as I was alongside the best linemates and we had great chemistry - Jaxsin Vaughan and Smyth Rebman. We are all play makers who set eachother up for success all season, they made it easy."
RINK: Teams go through high and lows throughout the year, what was a high of the season that sticks out to you?
Gavin: "Our weekend at Edge, it was exhibition games but we had tons of guys out, key players too. It showed our team that even with some of our best players being out, we can still play and win as a team against the 2nd best team in our leauge. It was a big accomplishment for our team."
