Academics at R1 Hockey Academy
The R1 Hockey Academy is a premier high-performance program dedicated to developing highly motivated Grade 5 to 9 student-athletes both on and off the ice. By combining elite coaching and state-of-the-art facilities with a fully accredited provincial curriculum, we prepare athletes for success in an environment designed to maximize their potential.
Our Academic Partnership with SCIDES
The teachers and administration at SCIDES (South Central Interior Distance Education School) take their responsibility for academic excellence and personalized learning very seriously. As a designated Provincial Online Learning School (POLS), SCIDES respects that every student-athlete comes to us with unique needs. Our academic model is built on:

Curriculum Excellence

English Language Arts: Grounded in the "Big Ideas" that language and text are sources of creativity and joy. Students explore how combining different texts allows for new understandings, promoting reflective thinking and professional communication.

Mathematics: Our math program fosters critical thinking and problem-solving. We focus on enhancing spatial sense, logical reasoning, and computational fluency, ensuring students can apply mathematical thinking to real-world scenarios.

Beyond the Core: Students access a wide range of specialized programs including Applied Design, Skills, and Technologies (ADST). Through the Competitive Athlete Program, R1 Academy athletes can gain provincial academic credit for their elite training and competition.
The Academic Environment
Our program operates out of RINK Kelowna, providing a structured, supervised, and collaborative classroom environment where athletes can focus on their coursework between training sessions. This model allows for a high-performance flow that mimics the professional athlete's lifestyle while ensuring all provincial graduation requirements are met.
How it Works
The R1 Academy provides the structure, while SCIDES provides the accredited credits. This partnership offers Structured Flexibility, allowing athletes to maintain a rigorous daily schedule that accommodates the demands of elite training and travel. Our on-site team helps students manage deadlines and navigate their portals, all within a culture of accountability alongside teammates who share the same high-performance goals.

My son started the R1 Hockey Academy in Grade 5 and has had the best experience. For the first time, he truly loves going to school and wakes up excited every day. He loves his teachers, coaches and teammates.
On the ice, James has been incredible. My son’s edges, speed, game IQ, and overall intensity have improved immensely. The off-ice training has also been amazing — he’s gained strength, learned proper form and bodyweight exercises, and this has helped him not only in hockey but in other sports as well.
